No Location Relocation: workshop residency exhibition 2008

No Location Relocation is a workshop and subsequent exhibition which aimed to investigate the possibilities and limitations of site-specific art, or artwork designed for a specific location. The workshop intended to investigate the value and importance of the repositioning and re-interpretation of a concept, focusing particularly on the possibility of adding additional levels of meaning through that recontextualization.

Between the 12th and 14th of June, 2008, at the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte, 11 carefully selected young Italian artists worked under the guidance of Milovan Farronato to investigate the role, value and the current status of site-specific art and its various forms of intervention. The students were instructed to design a work that would later be exhibited, on July 10th, 2008, at the office headquarters of A.T. Kearney, strategic consultants, in Milan. The exhibition at A.T. Kearney was an expression of the thoughts and experiments performed during these three days of intensive workshops.
Therefore, works designed in the context of the Fondazione Banna, a large agricultural estate in the countryside outside of Turin, were recontextualised through their subsequent exhibition in the offices of a strategic consulting firm in the center of Milan. These two locations, so different from eachother in function and aesthetics, were perfect counterpoints for this workshop on site-specificity, a subject so crucial to the dynamics and production of contemporary art.
To concieve of an artwork while working in a very particular setting and then present it in another, totally different, but equally particular context, this was the challenge offered to the young artists invited. The artists who participated in the project are: Ludovica Carbotta, Giulio Frigo, Davide Gennarino / Andrea Respino, Chiara Lecca, Clara Luiselli, Isola & Norzi, Cristiana Palandri, Gianandrea Poletta, Laura Pugno, Angelo Sarleti, Diego Scroppo
At the conclusion of the workshop two prizes were awarded. The first was an Acquisition Prize, with the project by the winner being acquired for the collection of …..The second was a Experimentation Prize being awarded to the artist whose project evidenced the greatest experimental thought and risk. The winners of the acquisition prize were Davide Gennarino / Andrea Respino and Cristiana Palandri.
The winner of the prize for the most experimental project was Giulio Frigo.
