Biografia Alberto Garutti

Alberto Garutti, an artist and a lecturer, teaches at the Academy of Brera in Milan and at the Faculty of Design and the Arts at the IUAV in Venice. He has been invited to major international events and institutions such as the 1990 Venice Biennale, the 2001 Istanbul Biennial and the Memory Marathon held at Serpentine Gallery of London in 2012, and commissioned to create public works for various cities and museums: these include the “Over the Edges” exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent, Belgium (2000), as well as work for the 21st Century Museum of Modern Art in Kanazawa, Japan (2002), the MARTa Museum in Herford (2003), and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, as part of the “Impossible Community” show held in 2011.
Garutti has executed permanent public works that are capable of bringing about relationships and links between public and private institutions and the city’s social fabric. Particularly worthy of note is the work he did for the cities of Bergamo and Bolzano (in collaboration with Museion), as well as for Trivero, where he executed a work for the Fondazione Zegna (2009), and Cagliari, for the Tiscali site in 2003. Garutti has held many solo shows in private spaces, and he has shown his work in many galleries in both Italy and abroad, including Paul Maenz Gallery in Cologne, Galleria Minini in Brescia, Magazzino d’Arte Moderna in Rome, Studio Guenzani and Galleria Marconi in Milan. His work has been displayed in numerous group exhibitions held in public spaces, where he has explored the relationship between art, the city and the landscape. Especially of interest are the 2000 and 2005 editions of “Arte all’Arte,” as well as “Luna Park” at Villa Manin, Codroipo (2005).
In 2008 Garutti took part in the exhibition “ITALICS, Arte italiana fra tradizione e rivoluzione 1968-2008” held at Palazzo Grassi in Venice, and later at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. First shown at Fondazione Remotti in Camogli, his work entitled Temporali was presented at MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo in Rome in 2009, as part of the cycle “Dialoghi con la città,” and at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. He was part of the jury for the Furla Art Prize, he chaired the jury for the most recent edition of Italian Studio Program at the MoMA PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York. In 2009 he won the Terna 02 and the Prize for Culture in the city of Ghent; the following year, in 2010, one of Garutti’s works was installed at Malpensa Airport and another one at the Cadorna Station in Milan. In 2011 his work for the Corale Vin- cenzo Bellini (2000) was selected by Creative Time, New York, out of 100 public projects for the “Living as Form: Socially Engaged Art from 1991-2011” show. One of the artist’s new public projects for the city of Milan is installed in one of the towers designed by the architect César Pelli for the Porta Nuova district, commissioned by Hines Italia.
In coordination with his solo exhibition at PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan, opened in the fall of 2012, curated by Paola Nicolin and Hans Ulrich Obrist was published by Walther König e Mousse Publishing the book “Alberto Garutti, didascalia/caption”.
In 2013 Garutti took part in some group exhibitions: “Lightopia” at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein; “Visione animale” in Civitella del Tronto; “Incontri” at the Schauwerk in Sindelfingen; “Quarant’anni d’artecontemporanea, Massimo Minini 1973-2013” at the Triennale di Milano. He also has been the protagonist in a solo exhibition in the project space Edicola Notte in Rome. Some of his works have been selected to be shown at Prague Biennale 6 curated by Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi.
