The artist as the first spectator

The DAD (Department of Architecture and Design at the Polytechnic of Turin) and the Spinola Banna Foundation for Art, set up an interdisciplinary training programme in 2013 dedicated to young artists attending the workshops of the Spinola Banna Foundation for Art and DAD specialisations, with the aim of bringing the languages of visual arts and architecture and design closer together, in line with the latest contemporary research..
The Spinola Foundation seals this first year of collaboration with the DAD with a conversation with the artist Alberto Garutti on Tuesday 4 November 2014 at 6pm in the Hall of Honour of the Castello del Valentino.
Alberto Garutti will converse with Claudio Germak, vice-director of the DAD and full professor in industrial design. The conversation with refer to the relationships between the two disciplines, in which architecture has always historically been a container of visual art, a link that new technologies have further underlined.
The discussion between the two academics will be preceded by a talk by Marco Boglione, founder and president of the Basic Net Group, entitled “Business @lla velocità del pensiero”.
The talks byGail Cochrane, artistic director of the Spinola Foundation and Rocco Curto, DAD director, will describe the passion and determination behind this programme to bring the visual arts and design closer together, and which has been the characterising feature of the collaboration between the two entities.
Alberto Garutti (Galbiate LC, 1948), an artist and a lecturer, teaches at the Academy of Brera in Milan and at the Faculty of Design and the Arts at the IUAV in Venice. He has been invited to major international events and institutions such as the 1990 Venice Biennale, the 2001 Istanbul Biennial and the Memory Marathon held at Serpentine Gallery of London in 2012, and commissioned to create public works for various cities and museums: these include the “Over the Edges” exhibition at the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent, Belgium (2000), as well as work for the 21st Century Museum of Modern Art in Kanazawa, Japan (2002), the MARTa Museum in Herford (2003), and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, as part of the “Impossible Community” show held in 2011.
Claudio Germak, architect and designer, Professor of Design at the Politecnico di Torino, vice-director of the Department of Architecture and Design and Director of the Master Transportation 3D Modelling. It 'a scholar of the production systems oriented design, industry and trade. Expert on product and process innovation, has developed products and design patents. He studied for a long time, starting with his doctoral thesis in 1984 and for 25 years with the De Ferrari Architects, urban scene in the physical dimension and human relations today mediated by the technological interaction.
Program advisor for Torino 2008 World Design Capital, he worked for many Italian cities, starting with his Turin, as part of the project for the public space.
His books include: Strategies urban image for Turin metropolitan city (Lybra Immagine 2003), Design & Industry in Piedmont (Allemandi & C. 2008), Man at the center of the project (edited) (Allemandi & C. 2008), Smart & Smile public spaces (in preparation).
