Andrea Viliani

Beginning in 2008, the Fondazione Banna Spinola per l’Arte, will expand upon its teaching initiatives by inaugurating a series of short project workshops dedicated to young artists who have already taken part in activities at the Fondazione.
Andrea Viliani, art critic and curator, was invited to the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l'Arte to lead the curatorial seminar which was held from June 27 to July 1, 2010.

Andrea Viliani has been the director of the Fondazione Galleria Civica in Trent since 2009. In this position he has curated exhibitions of work by Robert Kusmirowski, Melvin Moti, Gustav Metzger, Roman Ondák, and commissioned the piece Momentary Monument #3 by Lara Favaretto. He has also edited catalogues and artists books on Francesco Vezzoli, The Otolith Group, Dora García, Tris-Vonna Michell and Alberto Garutti. From 2005 to 2009 he curated the series +Museum–Shows and MAMbo Practices (No Dance Lessons) at the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna (MAMbo). He has also curated exhibitions for Nico Dockx/Building Transmissions, Ryan Gander, Jay Chung&Q Takeki Maeda, Markus Schinwald, Adam Chodzko, Bojan Sarcevic, Diego Perrone, Natascha Sadr-Haghighian, Guyton\Walker, Trisha Donnelly and Seth Price. In 2007, together with Gianfranco Maraniello, he curated the solo exhibitions of work by Giovanni Anselmo and Christopher Williams at the Gallery of Modern Art (GAM) in Bologna, an exhibition to celebrate the closure of this historic exhibition space. In 2008-2009 he curated the exhibition of work by the Dutch artists Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij and another of work by the American artist Sarah Morris. From 2000 to 2005 he worked as assistant curator at the Rivoli Castle Museum of Contemporary Art. As an independent curator he has curated numerous exhibitions for public institutions, these include the Centre International d’Art et du Paysage de l’Ile de Vassivière (Rosa Barba) and the Centre Culturel Français in Milan (Aurelian Froment). He writes for several magazines, including FROG and Kaleidoscope; he also responsible for the Curator’s Corner column in Mousse. He was one of the 60 ‘players’ for the Lyon Biennial in 2007 and one of the ‘agents’ for dOCUMENTA (13).
